Gearing up for the Recreation Northwest EXPO!

I’m very excited to attend the Recreation Northwest Outdoor Summit and EXPO tomorrow. What is an EXPO, you ask? It’s a gathering of 70 of the greatest outdoor recreation manufacturers, stewardship organizations, coaches, races, retailers and more, all under one roof. They’ll be there to share and engage with the public, introduce themselves and get folks excited about being outside in the most beautiful place on earth. With Boundary Bay beer, giveaways, raffle prizes and all of your buddies. Fun, fun, fun!

The Outdoor Summit in the morning will bring together all of those outdoors types to learn and share new ideas, and find out how outdoor recreation drives a big chunk of the economy in Bellingham and the state of Washington. Guest speakers include Jon Snyder, the governor’s Policy Advisor on Outdoor Recreation and Economic Development, and Tim Niemier, founder of Ocean Kayak. Participants can attend a roundtable discussion on manufacturing or getting people outside. I had an insightful conversation with Jon Snyder recently. It’s wonderful to know that outdoor rec is a valued aspect of Washington State policy.

The final pieces in EXPO weekend are a bunch of fun Excursions on Saturday. Expert guides are helping people get outdoors and try new activities, like trail running, mountain biking, paddling and hiking. This is huge! Getting folks outdoors is the key to a healthier and happier community. It’s a scientific fact. And when you can run the trails of the Chuckanut Mountains with ultramarathon champ Krissy Moehl, it doesn’t get much better than that.

And if you’re wondering what a marketing writer, web content writer and travel writer is doing at an event like this, let me explain: I get to work with the dynamic duo behind Recreation Northwest, Todd Elsworth and April Claxton, so I’ll be live tweeting the entire day. I hope I get a good night’s sleep—I’m going to need it! Hope to see you there.
